Longing for a child, Hannah escapes from the present and her domineering husband Tom by writing make-believe stories for children. When she is comforted by Richard, a colleague of Tom’s, a passionate but disastrous affair follows.
Returning to Bath, her place of birth, Hannah meets Alex, a talented American woman, and a close friendship blossoms. A fresh start with Tom is shattered when Hannah discovers she is carrying her long-awaited baby – Richard’s child. She flees to Alex in Bath where the two women grow ever closer as Hannah’s child is born.
But when Richard returns, Hannah finds suddenly that she must choose between the father of the son she cherishes and the woman who both loves her deeply and needs her more than ever.
